解剖少年綠海龜屍體 肚內藏大量垃圾及原隻手術手套

10 月 13 日打緊 8 號風球浪卡時,有熱心市民透過 Facebook 聯絡我地研究組,係深井雙仙灣發現一隻海龜屍體,即係近期我地協助漁農自然護理署(漁護署)處理嘅第二隻海龜。衷心感激熱心市民係惡劣天氣下嘅協助,等我地可以研究佢嘅健康狀況同生活史。大家如果見到擱淺嘅海洋動物,記得打1823通知漁護署或者聯絡我地,我地亦會轉告漁護署!

由於哩隻少年綠海龜重未成熟,所以無辨法推斷佢嘅性別;相比起上一隻綠海龜就無咁腐爛,我地做傳統解剖時重可以搵到部份完整嘅器官。透過影像解剖,我地發現食道、胃部同腸道有食物同異物,尤其係食道明顯脹大。經傳統解剖後,除了小部份係食物同糞便外,其餘全部都係海洋垃圾,例如膠袋同飲品包裝紙。雖然唔可以百分百肯定哩隻綠海龜嘅死因,但可以清楚見到海洋垃圾正在影響緊海龜。

海洋動物誤食塑膠垃圾有機會造成腸道阻塞,引致消化系統潰瘍同穿窿,最後導致動物死亡。大家記得千祈唔好亂拋垃圾!唔單止係海洋,係市區同郊區棄置嘅垃圾都有機會透過風雨或溝渠等流入大海,危害海洋動物嘅健康,破壞海洋生態!

On 13 Oct 2020, as tropical cyclone Nangka was brushing past Hong Kong with the No.8 typhoon signal hoisted, enthusiastic citizens contacted us by Facebook and reported a sea turtle carcass in the Gemini Beach, Sham Tseng. This was also the second sea turtle carcass we assisted Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) to handle within a week’s time. We are deeply indebted to the kind citizens help on retrieving the carcass in such adverse weather, which allowed us to conduct a thorough postmortem investigation. If you spot any stranded aquatic animals, do contact AFCD immediately via 1823 or our team via Facebook, we will help to report the case to AFCD!

Due to its physical immaturity, the sex of this juvenile Green Turtle is undetermined. The condition of this sea turtle was less decomposed compared to the previous one. Some intact coelomic cavity organs were still identifiable during the conventional necropsy. Through virtopsy, we noted food and foreign bodies remained in oesophagus, stomach and intestine. Upper gastrointestinal tract was peculiarly enlarged.

In the course of conventional necropsy, apart from small amount of food remains and fecal matter, we found vast amount of marine plastic debris such as plastic bag and bottle label. Although the cause of death cannot be clearly determined, it is obvious that marine debris is already affecting sea turtles.
Ingestion of plastic debris leads to partial or complete blockage in its guts, which leads to gastrointestinal ulceration and perforation, resulting in death eventually. DO NOT litter! This not only applies to our ocean, but also any city areas and rural areas. The debris could be brought into the ocean by wind, water or ditch, which in turn risking the life of aquatic animals and destroying the ocean ecosystem.
