My Dream for China: Before June 4

Two years ago approaching the 20th anniversary of the SAR, I wrote some Blunt Words entitled “Upright in Deep Winters” to discuss whether academic freedom has declined. Two years later, I have witnessed changes.

On the eve of June Fourth, I picked up my pen again, to write down my dream for China.

In 1983, Roman Tam sang “the dream of yours and mine”, that “every dream flows to us from the Yellow River” and concluded that “all Chinese dreams for five millenniums are just one same dream” which is “be happy be free for every me”.

In 1989, Roman sang this “Chinese Dream” again in “The Concert for Democracy in China”.

In 1993, Hong Kong people sang, “I have a dream never fading never fall, the blossom of freedom blooming even when it rains more and more.”

In 2012, quite recently, Xi also announced a “Chinese Dream”, said “rejuvenation of the Chinese nation is the greatest dream of the Chinese race in modern time”.

In 2019, being the centenary of May Fourth, the thirtieth anniversary of June Fourth, and the beginning of HKPOP, I also have a dream for China: Let Mr Democracy and Mr Science debate with Marx, Lenin, Mao and Xi, deliberate with all the saints and nobles, then let the people of the world decide which way to utopia by a general vote. Yes? Scared?

Between science and democracy, which comes first? Can one go without the other?

Can science prove that democracy is the best system? And is democracy the only cradle for science?

If Marx’ materialist dialectics is science, then dictatorship of the proletariat should be a scientific conclusion. Unfortunately, or should be fortunately, the spirit of science is mistake, or depictable mistake. Marx was wrong, but his good intention should be applauded. Unfortunately his followers have mythicized him. Communism has not brought any human society to utopia. It has only helped dictators to cling on power, to rule like in animal farm. On the contrary, democratic countries seems capable of peaceful evolutions to face challenges. Mr Democracy and Mr Science, do you have anything to say?

Science is a philosophy, a method to pursue truth. The development of science requires the freedom of thought protected by democracy. Authoritarian regimes develop applied science to control their people, to eliminate dissidents. Dictators are scared of science and freewill, because the starting point of science is the freedom for everyone to say “no”!

In my dream for China, everybody can say “no”.
