(Many people in Hong Kong have absolutely no or little interest in so-called democracy, freedom and justice. What matters to them is solely earning money and a stable life. These universal values are just intangible to them. A well-known HK localist writer, Lewis Lau, has succinctly summed up this mentality, "eating, playing, shagging and sleeping", which is "sik, wan, diu, fan" in our native tongue, Cantonese, a phrase which is much worth remembering for you rather than the mundane "ni hao" and “konnichiwa”.

This mentality may well be related to the multitude of wars as well as the Cultural Revolution in recent Chinese history. That's why for many Chinese people, satisfaction of the stomach would already be a luxury. That is the reason why the Chinese version of "how are you?" is "have you eaten rice yet?". In recent years, more and more Hongkongers deny their Chinese identity, but unfortunately, this mentality is still undeniably Chinese. Indeed, some holding this mentality are well-educated enough. Also, Hong Kong doesn’t have a long history of parliamentary democracy. The first directly elected seats of the Legislative Council can only be traced back to 1991. Hence, people from the older generations generally don’t have much of a concept on parliamentary democracy.)

(Therefore, you can see political parties organising blood pressure measuring sessions and inexpensive short trips when elections are approaching. These events mainly target the middle-aged and elderly, who may live alone or have busy children living far away. These people would be deeply touched when they feel that the political parties care for them. Then they won't find their political platforms important anymore. In these short trips, they can make friends. If fortunate enough, they may get to know some good-looking fellow travellers, with whom they can exchange contact details and then a few selfies from time to time. They can also meet for dim-sum together.)
