Stop Pointing Guns at Hong Kong Students
We are a group of staff from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. In the past 35 years, we have been honouring our responsibility and establishing HKAPA as the leading tertiary institution for the performing arts in Asia. Its educational philosophy reflects the cultural diversity of Hong Kong with emphasis on Chinese and Western traditions, and interdisciplinary learning. We have succeeded tremendously in grooming performing arts talents in the fields of Chinese Opera, Dance, Drama, Film and Television, Music and Theatre and Entertainment Arts, who made Hong Kong people proud by creating outstanding performing arts programs that uplifted the cultural quality and spirit of Hong Kong people. In a recent QS rankings, HKAPA was ranked No.1 in Asia and 13th in the world in the QS category of performing arts institutions. We will continue to maintain the highest levels of excellence in its work in performing arts education, nurturing young and emerging talents in the performing arts and enriching the cultural life of Hong Kong community.
Since June this year, like all the Hong Kong people, our staff have witnessed peaceful gatherings and marches of citizens. But ever since the random attack of innocent citizens at Yuen Long on 21 July, violent attacks on unarmed peaceful protesters were reported in different districts where Hong Kong people’s lives and safety are threatened. Numerous young people sacrificed their lives and withstood tear gas and police batons with their tiny bodies. All of which were out of the love of Hong Kong, our home, and to protect our freedom from fear. It’s
heartbreaking to think of all the young and innocent smiley faces and the hard works paid at studies while they were at schools in the city.
In this difficult time of Hong Kong, in view of the escalated unnecessary violence towards young students, we as staff in a tertiary institution, shall walk with Hong Kong citizens to protect our children and the tremendous art and cultural landscape cultivated by the devoted hard work and rational cooperation of Hong Kong citizens.
We strongly urge the government to stop all the violence and respond to the five demands of Hong Kong citizens:
1. To fully withdraw the extradition bill;
2. To retract the designation of all riot charges;
3. To release the students and anti-extradition bill protestors;
4. To form an independent investigation committee to investigate alleged
police abuses of
power and the random attack of innocent citizens in Yuen Long;
5. To realize dual universal suffrage.
We also strongly urge our young people to cherish your lives. The future of Hong Kong needs you!
