On 25 September 2020, some netizens mobilised people to take part in the ‘Reading Apple Daily in Central’ activity, which was joined by 15 people.

Some netizens have initiated a campaign called ‘Reading Apple Daily with you in Central’. By urging the community to join them in reading Apple Daily silently in public at Statue’s Square, it is meant to be an act of resistance to protest against the recent interventions against press freedom.

Miss A was one of the three office workers who joined this reading campaign together. Since October last year, she frequently took part in the campaign ‘Lunch with you’. Miss A noticed that the number of participants in these movements has dropped steadily. She felt that many office workers are worried about the consequences of joining social movements, and so no longer joined activities such as ’Lunch with you’. Also, because of the passing of the National Security Law, it is difficult to shout any slogans in public or do something visible. Hence, she said that the latest ‘Reading’ campaign is quite successful in the sense that you could tell that those reading the newspaper together were the supporters.

Although there were not many participants, she wanted to show her continued support to the movement by taking part when she still could. She said: ‘Actually all I did was come to join this and to read the newspaper together after lunch.’

At its busiest time, there were around 15 people joining the ‘Reading Apple Daily in Central’ event, including a participant who joined for the first time, and a non-Asian participant who has lived in Hong Kong for several years. Some people brought along a stack of Apple Daily to share with the others. There were also those who made the ‘5-1’ gesture with their hands.

Meanwhile, there were some ten police officers and a police car that patrolled the area as it happened.
